I already told you that late Sunday night the Phillies agreed to terms with Larry Greene who was their top pick in the 2011 MLB Draft.
Now here are some more developments…
On Monday night the Phillies agreed to terms with their second round pick (65th overall) Roman Quinn for an estimated $775K. Quinn is just a high school outfielder and was said to be the fastest legitimate prospect in the draft, and you know how much we love speedy outfielders. He has been praised for his work ethic, and has also played second base. Because of his speed, range, and arm, he’s most fitted to cover center field.
Quinn is just 18 years old, so he is easily three years away from being a part of a Major League club.
The Phillies have also come to terms with their fifth round pick (151 overall) Mitchell Walding for $800K. Walding is a 6-3, 195-pound shortstop out of St. Mary’s High School in Stockton, California. He’s a got a strong arm, and plays a pretty clean shortstop. He’s got a fluid swing, and is (just like we like em’) left-handed.
It’s hard to say what might come of Walding, but the Phillies don’t have a lot of infield depth, so this was a smart pick. It’s a lot of money to pay out for a kid in the fifth round, but with a few of the Phillies other picks choosing to keep their college commitments (Zachary Wright, Jacob Overbey, Ryan Garvey) they had some extra funds to work with, and their needs became greater. Also Walding was committed to Oregon which has a great program, so it probably took a little more then necessary to get him to put pen to paper.
Again. He’s very young, and if things don’t work out for the Phillies with Jimmy Rollins, I think that they will look outside the organization some, and they also have Freddy Galvis who has recently been promoted to Triple A Lehigh Valley. I still think that they get a deal done with Rollins.
The Phillies have also signed a late pick named Jesen Dygestile-Therrien. He’s a right handed pitcher from Canada.
